Trumpet and New Orleans Jazz

Swing Dancing with The Roaring Lions

Join us this Friday for an amazing evening of swing dancing, New Orleans Jazz music, and delicious food! This quarter will take you from hot jazz swing dancing while strolling on the streets of New Orleans, to a fiery bayou boogaloo then old time waltzing and back again! The Lions are made up of Asheville’s finest traditional jazz musicians, drawing members from bands such as The Squirrel Nut Zippers, Empire Strikes Brass, The Krektones, and The Smoking Hots. Haunted Corn Maze & Dance Party

This one is for big kids and grown-ups! Of course you can still bring the littles. The haunted corn maze will be open from 7-9pm, and from 8-11pm DJ Disc-Oh! will be dropping some spooky thriller jams! From the Farm Front

Last night I sat on the porch while the third rainstorm of the day came up the valley my way and I watched the lightening bugs in the forest and couldn’t help but wonder what soundtrack they were dancing to, if there was was one to hear. Summer has arrived on the farm and what lies ahead in the next few months needs a soundtrack to dance to. The dance has many people, but I don’t envision that its a typical Fairview square dance where you can’t quite hear the caller and your next step will likely end up on someones toes in effort to keep the line moving in the right direction. No, it sounds more like the thunder and the applause of the rain, loud and heavy storms coming my way before I can gather my things, bring in the comforter from the clothesline and head for the house.

The past two nights Granny Annie has joined us for dinner. With John in Raleigh most weeknights and Jamie visiting accounts in Hickory and Charlotte this week we have had some not so organized impromptu dinners. I cooked the boys favorite Pasta Roberto and we had spicy greens and peas from the garden two nights ago. When I got home from picking up Cyrus and Nolin from their afterschool fun yesterday I found, that our proud fisherman Levi, had caught a 16″ large mouth bass from the pond with Granny Annie, which she was sauteing in the pan for dinner. We coupled this with mashed potatoes (Cyrus’ dinner request) and an egg casserole with kale and cilantro also from the garden bounty. Not exactly a well put together dinner, but substance nonetheless, and a chance to sit for 20 minutes that was welcome at the end of a long day.

Levi is in his last week of preschool, my baby is heading to kindergarden after this summer break, and he is so ready. My hope for him is that he doesn’t enter this new school year with another cast on his arm. Two major breaks and six casts later he has the resilience and tolerance of no person I have ever met as he still attempts life with gusto. Nolin played his first Capture the Hoops game today, an Evergreen tradition for third graders, which he will be rising to next year. He also celebrated the joys of two months of ukelele lessons and made $8 busking at the inaugural Fairview Farmers Market at the elementary school over the weekend. Cyrus will be in middle school next year its still hard to believe! He and his cousin Anne were the first buskers at HNG making their ice cream and root beer money playing at the farm store while jamming away on bluegrass songs for our customers. It’s hard to believe that these children I carried in the sling while giving farm tours to preschoolers seven years ago are growing up into the wonderful young people that they have become.  nolinonuke

But the boys aren’t the only thing growing around here:

1. The blueberries are ready for picking and we are opening the upick today. This marks the beginning of berry season with black raspberries and blackberries to quickly follow.

2. I made my first solo appearance on the cover of a magazine. Farm Bureau’s Field and Family wrote a nice article about the farm and our berries. This all was prepared last year at this time which might has well been a lifetime ago because when my friend Sam called to tell me about it, it took a minute to remember that day even happened. fieldandfamilywsam

3. The kitchen and butchery is coming along. The roof is on and we are diligently making all the fun decisions like where to put electrical outlets and light switches. It’s going to be so great when we can serve you food, cut our own meat, create awesome sausages, make pumpkin pies for Thanksgiving and offer cooking classes over the winter.

4. We just launched our first ever (can you say step outside of your box Amy) crowdfunding campaign on Barnraiser. Get this, we are trying to raise $25K in 30 days. So far we are on our way with 52 awesome supporters donating for some great gifts to total $5785! If you want to be a part of this project and show your love by backing it you can do so here. All this support keeps us going and fuels our enthusiasm for this bear of a project. The benefits to the community we hope will spread far and wide once we open, fingers crossed, in August.

5. Saturday, June 20th we will bring in the official summer season with an Open House: Kitchen and Farm Tour. Burgers and hot dogs will be served between 11-1, with all donations going to our Barnraiser Project. Tours will be given at 10am and 2pm on Saturday. The culvert slides, baby chicks, pigs and creek will be ready for the kiddos to come play. See you there?

6. HNGF Camp will be held in the Big Barn behind the Farm Store so the farm will be alive with lots of children enjoying art, drama, and riding horses over the next five weeks. But don’t worry we have plenty of room for other visitors during that time as well!

We hope you are as excited about the transition from spring to summer as we are and that you will come to the farm to celebrate with us and catch us up on your lives too. The chance to make this land and this business into a place for our community to enjoy has been one we are thankful for and you are the reason we are still going.

Fall Field Trips

Hickory Nut Gap will host school field trips throughout the fall season. Tuesday through Friday there are two time slots; 9-10:30 or 10:30-12, for classes to come out and learn about the farm. We can accommodate groups of any age group or size. The cost is only $5 per student and chaperone and no cost for teachers. Call 628-1027 or email Ann Araps at [email protected] to set up a time and date for a class to come out.

Curriculum for these trips may vary based on the size and grade level involved. The kids will have an opportunity to learn about a variety of farm animals and plants; from calves and baby chicks, to apples and blueberries. Students will also get to sample some of the apple varieties that we have available. After the farmer lead portion of the field trip, classes will have access to one of our picnic areas for lunch and then are welcome to stay and enjoy the other activities on the farm like the corn maze and the nature trail.

ASAP Farm Tours

Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project Farm Tours –  are happening September 21st and 22nd. Hickory Nut Gap will be one stop along the way. Don’t miss your chance to get a full tour of the farm from Owner, Jamie Ager. Tours will be going on all afternoon from 1pm until 5pm. The day’s festivities will also include free samples of some of our beef, pork, and chicken products, and the opportunity to shop in the farmstore after the tour. Cost for the ASAP farm tours is $25 per carload for the entire weekend. If you wish to access Hickory Nut Gap admission areas after the tour we are still charging regular admission for access to the rest of the farm activities.

If you’ve never been on a Hickory Nut Gap tour before, you’ll learn a little history, a little biology, and a whole lot about cows. You’ll get the full scoop on how we run our farm and what we’re passionate about. You will also have a chance to ask any questions you may have about our meat and our farming practices.  Tours will last roughly 45 minutes and you should be sure to bring close-toed shoes and comfortable walking attire. The Local Joint, a down home Fairview eatery, will be selling hot meals for those who fancy a bit to eat as well.  

Visit the Farm this Fall

Bring the whole family out to the farm for a day and enjoy all your favorite Ag-tivities along with a bunch of new additions this year like the giant culvert slides and the kiddy-cart. Admission is $8 for adults and $6 for kids on weekends and $1 off those prices during the week. Whether you want to spend an hour, or the whole afternoon tromping around the farm, we like to let all our visitors get in touch with their inner kid. Farm hours run from 9 am to 6 pm 7 days a week.

Come play on the hay pile, or ride the trikes through the barn, pet the baby calves and watch the piglets and turkeys root through their pens, take a short hike on our nature trail and learn the names of some of the native plants, stumble your way through the corn maze, or visit the U-pick pumpkin patch. On the weekends we have pony rides available. There will also be food trucks serving up a variety of tasty meals for weekend visitors. There is no place like the farm to be a kid, to romp and let loose the worries of a busy life. Come on out and see for yourself!

Whole Milk From Grassfed Cows at the Farmstore!

We have started selling North Carolina grassfed cows milk for the first time since Hickory Nut Gap Farm was a dairy! We aren’t the ones producing this milk, though. Wholesome Country Creamery is a new dairy outside of Hamptonville, NC. Their cows are 100% grassfed and humanely treated. We now sell both half gallons (available for $6.00) and 12oz bottles ($2.50) of the non-homogenized whole milk in our farmstore in Fairview.

Drinking the cream from milk is a treat that not many people get to enjoy anymore. Non-homogenized milk is pasteurized but it has not been through the pressurization process which evenly distributes the fat from the cream throughout the nonfat milk. This means that the cream will rise to the top of the whole milk and must be either shaken to disperse it, or enjoyed skimmed from the top of the bottle! Our farmstore is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10am to 5pm. Besides fresh whole milk, we sell a variety of other local products including: Roots hummus, 5th Sun Chips and Salsa, Haw Creek Honey, Buchi Kombucha, Roots and Branches crackers, and much more. Our grassfed beef, pastured pork, poultry, and eggs are also available for purchase at the farmstore.

A Jam Jamboree

A cool and rainy spring may have kept you inside too much over the past few months but it has done wonders for our fruits and berries! Our organic U-pick blueberries are just beginning to blush in shades of blue and our blackberries, black raspberries, and red raspberries are on their way to a beautiful crop. Beginning June 19th, you can bring the whole family out the farm to pick berries and enjoy the beautiful views from Berry Hill.

There is nothing more satisfying than the sweet, wily taste of fresh blueberries for breakfast. Unless, of course, you consider eating fresh blueberries still sun warm and succulent that you picked yourself from the farm. This will also be our first year to harvest black raspberries. They should begin to ripen toward the end of June and early July will be blackberry season for those who prefer a little more tartness in your berry. The red raspberries usually finish out the U-pick fruits, stretching the season until mid to late August and by then we’ll be gearing up for apples!

Farm Field Trips

Education is a big part of what we do here at Hickory Nut Gap. This spring we’re initiating spring field trips for pre-k through middle school students. Field trips are only $5 per student and we accept groups of all sizes. Set up a group by calling the farmstore at 828-628-1027.

It’s especially hard for kids to sit still when the weather is this beautiful. Here on the farm we’ll take them out to see our berry bushes, talk about soils and the needs of growing plants, and see some of the animals that live here at Hickory Nut Gap. They’ll also participate in activities to reinforce the lesson and help them get out all those warm weather wiggles. We accept groups of all sizes so please call if you have a group that may be interested and we can arrange the rest of the details.

 

Open House and Farmers Markets

Sorry for any confusion about the April date that appeared here earlier. May 18th is the new official date for the Open House.  If you’ve been telling yourself for months that you need to make it out the farm but you just haven’t had the time or found the right occasion, look no further. We are having an Open House on May 18th at the farm, which is located at 57 Sugar Hollow Rd. in Fairview. The event also includes a  Farm Tour at 3pm and free samples! 

Come check out our farmstore where you can buy fresh 100% grassfed beef, pastured pork and poultry, plus tons of other local food and craft items. Go on the Farm Tour with Jamie Ager and romp around the farm to see how we raise our animals and learn about our vision as a farm and local business. Try some of our cured pork and fresh cooked meats. No need to reserve a space or rsvp, just come on out and enjoy a little springtime on the farm. Hope to see you soon!

We will be selling our products on Saturdays at the North Asheville Market on the campus of UNCA and at Asheville City Market, which is located at 161 South Charlotte Street in the parking lot of the Public Works Building. Happy as a Spring Chicken

That’s right, the weather is warming up and that means we’ll have fresh chicken soon. Starting April 24 you can come out to the farmstore or visit us at our farmers market venues and buy fresh, never frozen chicken. We raise our poultry out in the pasture so they have plenty of space to knock about in the dirt and enjoy the fresh green clover and the warm sunny days of spring.

Pastured chicken is consistently found to have higher levels of vitamins A,C, and E, as well as much higher amounts of Omega-3 fatty acids and beta-carotene. Not only that but it tastes great too! This year we’ve come up with a new pasture rotation system for our poultry so that we will have fresh chicken all summer long. We will also bring chicken to our Market locations starting this weekend, 4/6/13 at the Asheville City Market.

Gift Baskets and Yummy Prosciutto

Our eleven month aged, pastured pork hams have been transformed yet again into a prosciutto style thinly sliced, cured delicacy. Available at the Farm Store, Asheville City Market, North Asheville Market and West Asheville Market. Wrap it over asparagus, treat yourself to using it as a pizza topping or create a locally grown charcuterie appetizer tray at your next holiday party including: HNG prosciutto, sopressata, salami, smoked kielbasa.
