Hickory Nut Gap Farm

Pastured pigs under canopy of trees

Pastured Pork...the other red meat

Full of flavor, natural color, and gorgeously marbled with fat, once you taste our pork there will be no Pigs rooting on pastureturning back.

The pigs are raised under one or more of our three production models. During the hot summer we fence wooded areas that need clearing, and turn the pigs out to follow their instincts. The result is a clean forest floor to which grasses may be planted following the pigs departure. The second model keeps the pigs warm and dry in the barn during the winter months. The pigs coexist with the cows turning barn bedding into compost to later be used as fertilizer for the pastures. Thirdly we raise pigs on poor quality pastures rotating them through a paddock system and planting annuals behind them for feed next time around.

Processing

Our pigs are taken to a federally inspected butcher plant in North Carolina. This inspection allows us to sell our meat to individual people, restaurants, groceries, etc. The processor cuts to our specifications, vacuum seals, labels, and then freezes the product. We pick up the meat with a freezer truck and bring it back to the farm for storage and distribution.
